Bring your favorite sports ground in 2D

Updated: Jun 3, 2020

“The key is not the will to win. Everybody has that. It is the will to prepare to win that is

important.” So, why not understand the sports ground well and move one step closer in winning the game along with enhancing our mathematical skills. This activity is to learn,

understand, and get comfortable with scaling along with mathematical measurements by sketching your favorite sports game ground.

Introduction:

Sometimes you may want to make something bigger or smaller than it’s real size. Either way, you need to understand and know what scale factor is in order to decide shrinking or enlarging. Life is much easier when we know how to measure things and for that you need to know the concept of measurements. Measurement is the action of measuring something. Graph Paper is also known as a Grid Paper. It is basically used to draw objects that need to be built as per specified measurements.

Requirements:

  • Graph Paper

  • Ruler

  • Pencil

  • Compass

Steps:

  1. The initial task is to decide which sports ground you want to draw and then research and learn about the ground

  2. You need to sketch the ground keeping in mind the measurements required for the game

  3. Decide the scale you want to use on the graph paper - On the graph paper your measurement would be: 1 Centimeter = 10 ft

  4. Mark the measurements on the graph paper respectively and draw the outline of the ground

  5. Start drawing the boundaries and lines for the centerline, posts, etc for the chosen sports keeping in mind that everything you sketch should scale with 10 ft = 1 Centimeter

Learning Opportunity:

  • The size by which we alter the object either smaller or larger is described by its scale factor

  • The concept of the scale factor is closely related to ratio, proportion, and percentages, where various amounts must be multiplied or divided by the same number to increase or decrease a quantity

  • Graph Paper is something that depends on our comfort level and familiarity with such a tool is important

  • The more comfortable a person is with manipulation, the more flexible it is with the graph paper, it can be used in a more efficient, convenient and effective manner

  • Graph paper can help students when creating, drawing and organizing their work

  • Graph Paper that we are using is a 1-centimeter grid paper

  • So, to manipulate as per our desired defined scale helps kids to understand the basics and get comfortable with numbers

  • Measurements are something that you need to visualize and judge accordingly

Time Required: 20 minutes
